The NBA is on TV for almost 8 out of the 12 months of the year if you include playoffs and preseason games. However, they have to find a way to capitalize and bring in audiences for the other 4 months that they have nothing going on. The NBA is able to do this is a variety of ways such as replaying classic and intriguing games on NBA and Raptor TV. They hold fundraisers in the summer which are organized and even endorsed by the biggest names in the sport. The biggest activity that takes place over the course of those four months that keeps fans and viewers on the edge of their seats and wanting more is the NBA free agent market. Every summer there is a herd of players who become unrestricted free agents and have the ability to choose what team they would like to offer their services too. The summer of 2010 is going to be the biggest free agent market in NBA history.

Every summer there are many stars that can opt out of their contract and play for true championship contenders in the opportunity of surrendering a few bucks to solidify their legacy with some NBA hardware. This summer is going to be the biggest ever that will keep fans on the edge of their seat to see if their superstar will resign a new contract or choose to play elsewhere. Some of the names include Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki, and Kobe Bryant. All the names mentioned above if they changed team it would turn the NBA nation upside down because they would instantly make any team a championship contender.

These players know the choices they have ahead of them and have to not only choose for the money but also based on the future and where they see their career heading in 5 to 10 years. For example, if Lebron James known as one of the best players in the game were to leave Cleveland for New York he would instantly make the Knicks a contender maybe not instantly but over the course of two to three years with draft choices and trades definitely. Just look at what he was able to do with Cleveland the worst team in the NBA when he was drafted changed them into the best team in the league over the course of 6 years.

The NBA free agent market has a big lead up to it. It starts the prior season from the start. For example, for this summer’s free agent market teams started planning a year in advance. By trading players to dump and clear cap space. The New York Knicks a team expected to be the most active this summer traded almost every player on their rosters to clear cap space. They acquired Tracy Mcgrady at the trade deadline because even though he is the highest paid player in the league this year it is the final year of his contract. The New York Knicks have enough cap space to sign two max contract players. For example, they would be able to sign a combination of stars such as Lebron and Wade, Wade and Bosh, or onLebr and Bosh. This summers NBA free agent market is going to be a spectacle to watch as it will change everything in the NBA next year in terms of teams and their standings.
