2010 NBA Free Agent Market

Bookmark and Share

The NBA is on TV for almost 8 out of the 12 months of the year if you include playoffs and preseason games. However, they have to find a way to capitalize and bring in audiences for the other 4 months that they have nothing going on. The NBA is able to do this is a variety of ways such as replaying classic and intriguing games on NBA and Raptor TV. They hold fundraisers in the summer which are organized and even endorsed by the biggest names in the sport. The biggest activity that takes place over the course of those four months that keeps fans and viewers on the edge of their seats and wanting more is the NBA free agent market. Every summer there is a herd of players who become unrestricted free agents and have the ability to choose what team they would like to offer their services too. The summer of 2010 is going to be the biggest free agent market in NBA history.

Every summer there are many stars that can opt out of their contract and play for true championship contenders in the opportunity of surrendering a few bucks to solidify their legacy with some NBA hardware. This summer is going to be the biggest ever that will keep fans on the edge of their seat to see if their superstar will resign a new contract or choose to play elsewhere. Some of the names include Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki, and Kobe Bryant. All the names mentioned above if they changed team it would turn the NBA nation upside down because they would instantly make any team a championship contender.

These players know the choices they have ahead of them and have to not only choose for the money but also based on the future and where they see their career heading in 5 to 10 years. For example, if Lebron James known as one of the best players in the game were to leave Cleveland for New York he would instantly make the Knicks a contender maybe not instantly but over the course of two to three years with draft choices and trades definitely. Just look at what he was able to do with Cleveland the worst team in the NBA when he was drafted changed them into the best team in the league over the course of 6 years.

The NBA free agent market has a big lead up to it. It starts the prior season from the start. For example, for this summer’s free agent market teams started planning a year in advance. By trading players to dump and clear cap space. The New York Knicks a team expected to be the most active this summer traded almost every player on their rosters to clear cap space. They acquired Tracy Mcgrady at the trade deadline because even though he is the highest paid player in the league this year it is the final year of his contract. The New York Knicks have enough cap space to sign two max contract players. For example, they would be able to sign a combination of stars such as Lebron and Wade, Wade and Bosh, or onLebr and Bosh. This summers NBA free agent market is going to be a spectacle to watch as it will change everything in the NBA next year in terms of teams and their standings.

Kobe or LeBron: The NBA’s Greatest Marketing Frenzy

The NBA is a national and world renowned brand name. Basketball games are watched all around the world. It is not the sport for just North Americans with the recent emergence of great talent pool of players in Europe such as Dirk Nowitzki, Pau Gasol and Andrei Kirilenko. The NBA is stretching its wings all around the world to reach the most number of people as possible and generate the most amount of revenue as possible. Throughout, their storied and great history the NBA has always had a player that they knew represented their values and core beliefs the best. They allowed this person to soak up the limelight, constantly broadcasted his games on TV, so as many people as possible could tune in easily and watch that individual in essence deliver a human highlight reel. All this NBA marketing frenzy was to generate more revenue and capture a larger demographic of viewers. For decades, this imaginary torch has been passed down from Wilt Chamberlain to Julius Erving, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan. These players have constantly delivered eye popping performances, were the best players in the league when they played and were looked up to by their peers and the community.

After the retirement of Michael Jordan hands down the great player to ever pick up and play the sport of basketball the NBA went through a dry spell of finding that one player who embodied everything they stood for and delivered show at the same time. The NBA has found these players who represent their league to the fullest. The NBA has been so lucky as to be blessed with not just one but two, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant making it the greatest marketing frenzy in NBA history. Both Kobe Bryant and LeBron James voted even amongst their peers are the hardest working and determined NBA players in the league. They have an excellent work ethic and humility to them that makes them great role models.

The NBA has put this great marketing frenzy to full effect in the recent past using major sponsors like Nike and Vitamin Water to help along the way. Not only was Nike responsible for providing apparel for both these athletes but now they are using them in commercials publicizing both the NBA and their own brand simultaneously. Nike has exploited this NBA marketing frenzy and taken it one step further by creating commercials called M V Puppets. These are set of commercials with two puppets one is Kobe and the other is LeBron. The setting for these commercials is they are both roommates living together and always trying to one up each other to make the claim of being the best.

This marketing frenzy by the NBA has been a blessing in disguise and they have definitely embraced it. They schedule the meetings between the two teams at the best possible moment to generate the largest potential audience and fan base. For example, this season they met on Christmas day which was perfect because everyone is home on Christmas and after lunch what would be better than to turn on the TV and watch two of the best in their sport go against each other. By having this great gift of two athletes so committed to solidify their legacies it creates for great TV and is this battle continues on the way it has been going NBA fans are in for a treat and the extra media frenzy created by the NBA is just like adding fuel to the fire.

Are NBA commericals effective?

The NBA is one of the four major sports that are followed by most North Americans all year round. The other sports are hockey the NHL, football the NFL and baseball the MLB. Through out the course of the season and playoffs the NBA is competing for the attention of viewers from all the other sports. From the start of the season to the end the NHL is on TV. For the first month of the season and the playoffs they are competing with the MLB for viewers and for the first half of the season they are competing with the NFL. In order to be effective and capture the largest audience the NBA ads and commercials have to be effective and concise.

The NBA ads and commercials use their greatest strengths to their advantage to create their commercials. They use jaw dropping highlights from past games and piece them together to show the audience in a 30 second span all the exciting and wonderful moments they are missing when they are tuning into another sporting event, TV show or even award ceremonies such as the Grammy’s, Emmy’s etc. During these commercials the NBA uses not just any athletes but rather the cream of the crop. They mostly use the athletes that are the most marketable and well known. The athletes used in a way are a brand name, even viewers who don’t watch the sport have heard of these athletes. They use athletes such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony and other franchise players.

Another way that the NBA ads and commercials reach the people is through their sponsors. There are several other sponsors to the NBA in terms of equipment. The two biggest sponsors are Adidas and Nike. Both these apparel makers have several big name athletes that are under their sponsorship and wear their gear throughout the course of the season. For example, Nike is notoriously associated with Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. They are famous for their recent line of MV Puppets commercials, this is a line of ads where both James and Bryant are roommates and what they would expect to do at home as they are both trying to one up each other in solidifying their legacy among the great ones. Adidas is famous for its association with Kevin Garnett, Derrick Rose and Tim Duncan. They have their own set of commercials that have their own athletes in a gym showcasing their skills and moves. Both Nike and Adidas are actually producing these commercials to reach the viewers and get them to invest in their apparel in the hopes it will make you a basketball players or as close to it as possible. However, inadvertently they are also advertising for the NBA because the athletes are wearing their team outfits during the commercial.

The NBA ads and commercials are designed and created, keeping the target market in mind and use catchy slogans. The slogan for the NBA is “where amazing happens”, this slogan portrays the image that an NBA game is not to be missed and even though it runs approximately two and a half hours it will keep any viewer hooked from tip off until the final buzzer sounds. There is always a chance to make that game winning shot that will silence the haters and have the fans cheering at the top of their voices as they see their opponents heart broken and frustrated. This creates a great sub plot for the NBA the next time the two teams meet again as there will be bad blood and the losing team want to get their revenge.
